The Psychological Scars After a Devastating Hurricane: A Path of Psychological Wreckage Throughout Jamaica.

When the devastating cyclone made landfall on Jamaica on 28 October with winds of 185mph, it resulted in a scene of widespread ruin. Residences, medical facilities, and critical infrastructure were leveled, leading to 32 deaths and affecting an approximate 1.5 million individuals. For clinical psychologist Toni-Jan Ifill, it was immediately clear that the physical wreckage would be paired with profound and enduring psychological scars.

“Everyday sounds can provoke them,” Ifill explains. “A patient spoke of a wheeled bin we often push through the passageways, whose sound reminded her of cracking branches and the fierce gales. She no longer wants to experiencing that particular noise.”

Over six weeks after the catastrophe, which also struck parts of Cuba, memories of the horrific event continue to trouble many staff at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston. Simply the noise of rain can now cause trauma responses among those who lived through it.

The Unseen Cost Beyond Economic Reconstruction

Hurricane Melissa led to a massive aid package valued at up to $6.7bn over a three-year period and an additional payment of $150 million from a innovative risk financing tool. But, experts warn this economic assistance does not address the invisible cost: pervasive mental health crises—notably among those previously affected from a previous disaster in 2024.

Although the lion's share of effort centers on restoring buildings, research over the last several years show that the risk of PTSD grows markedly after major storms and displacement. Experts are now calling for the inclusion of mental health support into disaster response plans across small island developing states.

Compounded Vulnerabilities: Displacement and Emotional Stability

Researchers stress how prolonged homelessness, destroyed jobs, and poor access to care worsen mental health risks. A 2023 Caribbean-focused paper identified a heightened danger of anxiety, depression, and PTSD after climate-related events. Additional analysis found comparable fear, anxiety, and distress among people affected by previous storms.

Dr. Eamin Heanoy, a academic who has analyzed disaster survivors globally, notes that survivors often encounter a trio of psychological hurdles: anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Dr. Rose-Ann Smith, a lecturer in geography and disaster risk management, agrees. She observes that while individuals can be strong, as the planet continues to warm, mental health is becoming an ever more critical issue—although detailed prevalence surveys is often insufficient.

These experts found that female survivors experienced more severe emotional impact than men. “So it’s quite possible women are at greater emotional risk than males during these events,” Smith says.

The Uncertain Path to Psychological Repair

Dr. Heanoy notes that while some initial improvement in psychological state is often seen within a twelve-month period, long-term outcomes are still unclear. The likelihood to which survivors bounce back depends heavily on the nature of the trauma and the care they receive.

The experts observe that the loss of homes and possessions can intensify the psychological burden to recover. Smith calls housing loss “a major source of stress,” particularly when people have no economic cushion. “Rebuilding comes with its own psychological weight,” she emphasizes.

Ifill sees the parallel situation among her clients: “People who had previous psychological issues have noticed it’s much more severe in this aftermath.”

In addition to the mental damage, practical challenges remain. The hurricane wiped out key water infrastructure, slowing the full return of water services. Insurance payouts, while crucial, do not address all of the chronic vulnerabilities laid bare by the storm.

Community Cohesion as a Vital Pillar

Critically is that material recovery cannot heal the deep sorrow caused by the loss of loved ones. Research shows that survivors frequently report help from neighbors to be more immediate than official aid.

“The government’s role is essential,” Smith says. “If it fails to materialize, or when it is inefficient, local people keep each other whole.”

Ifill notes the value of mutual support in navigating hardship. She says she was “struck by the positive attitude” among strong communities. “You've lost everything, right? But if a community has a supportive culture, they share laughter about the storm.”

She further acknowledges steps to promote mental health awareness after the disaster but advises about the negative effects of constant exposure to traumatic media. “My advice was limiting social media, trusting verified sources, and turning to apps to stay in touch with loved ones.”

A Growing Regional Priority

Recently, psychological support has become a higher priority from international agencies due to the intensifying climate emergency. The rising occurrence of climate disasters has catalyzed the development of tools for mental health response.

Regional institutions have published detailed resources to train responders in offering emotional aid in the wake of traumatic events. These projects aim to strengthen community and personal strength by training professionals, combating stigma, and facilitating the use of mental health services.

Monetary aid are also highlighted as key for protecting mental health. A producer from another Caribbean nation, who lost everything in a similar event, highlights the despair that arises when expected aid fails to materialize. “They came... But up to this day, we were not granted any payment,” he says.

A Plea for Comprehensive Rebuilding

Analysts note that the Caribbean region contributes a minuscule fraction of worldwide greenhouse gases yet endures disastrous climate impacts. A rapid and adequately resourced rebuilding is deemed vital to prevent enduring trauma.
