Our Premier Release of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Place.

At first glance, Lux might appear closer to an arduous scholarly examination rather than the latest popular music record from a musician who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Split across 4 distinct movements and voiced in 13 languages, it is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced opus that delves into feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently through the prism of different women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars skyward here, supported by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem quite modest.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That this album succeeds in escape overly academic posturing is nearly miraculous, with complete credit going to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds and the present, the scale are much greater on Lux, with the balancing act far more precarious. What truly raises this fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, is a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist at her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she's breaking hearts in two, you nevertheless want to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful energy comes forth clearly during a stunning Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Then, everything falls away, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment prior to a comically exaggerated string crescendo crashes down with cartoonish impact. The song then shifts to the wild track featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in the listener never quite understand—or even wish to predict—what you is going to next."

Nearly each song finishes in a completely distinct point than where it started. One moment examines the transient trappings of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work starts out moody and sinister, with menacing beats, before fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Of Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act of Lux involves straddling the line of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is little coincidence that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that seems to collect increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals upward. This feat is echoed by a different powerful ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating a former lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its built-in excess. It is a deep source of hidden gems that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While other major releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous banquet where the guests around the table, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's most restlessly creative visionary.
