"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: I also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated fans have publicly begged for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their music videos frequently depict them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to form a group."

"So everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The band are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That developed toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

One man left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

Yet Haim will consistently be their top commitment.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
